When yoga is no longer something that you do, it becomes a part of who you are

Yes, yoga is a physical practice. But the very essence of the yogic experience is not physical at all. As you advance your practice, yoga turns from something that you do into something that you are. Yoga becomes a way of being you. Over time, the border between yoga and the rest of your life evaporates into thin air.

The experience of being yoga is life-changing. It has ripple effects on all aspects of your day to day as well as the big picture of the existence. How you get out of bed in the morning, how you treat friends, family and colleagues, how they see you, how you respond to challenges, how you love, what you eat, how you raise your kids … everything.

But how to get there? In order to become yoga, you need to learn to see the world with the eyes of a yogi. That means you need to think like a yogi. And to do that, you need to study the original teachings of yoga philosophy.

Yoga is a very physical practice. To teach it well, you need to understand how the body works on the mat. That's what you learn in yoga anatomy. Unfortunately, getting a solid understanding of the human body as it relates to yoga is not as straightforward as you may think.

Some 200 hour YTTs (like my first training in India) skip the anatomy part completely and rely only on simple movement cues and - if those don't seem to work - harsh physical assists to get students into the shapes that the teacher wants to see.

Other programs (like the 20 hour anatomy workshop that I took to fill the knowledge gap that I brought home from India) teach yoga anatomy as if it was a seminar for students of medicine. They'll have you remember long lists of Latin terms for bones and muscles. But these grocery lists of names don't help you much when your student struggles in Down Dog and asks you for help.

Then there are some teachers (like the leader of my second YTT) who only focus on alignment. They teach you a library of cues that will get all students into the "perfect pose". The problem is, however, that the "perfect pose" doesn't exist. It's a myth. One-size-fits all cues don't work for most people.

So if you are a yoga teacher who actually cares about their students you need to go further. This means that if you are a yoga teacher who actually cares about your students, then you need to learn more than just one set of cues which supposedly make the "perfect pose". You need to understand all the ways in which yoga bodies differ. How to "read" your students, and which questions to ask so that you can tailor your teaching to specific students and give helpful advice about how they can advance their practice.

More than that, you should learn to create classes and give cues that embrace physical differences. Teach your students that props are not for losers. But that they should be our friends. Help them accept You can learn to offer multiple pose variations and help each student find the best version for their body. Y

After realizing that my way of teaching was outdated (even though it was considered the "gold standard" at the time), I had to start over.

When yoga is no longer something that you do, it becomes a part of who you are

Unfortunately, yoga philosophy is an afterthought for most yoga teachers and YTT leaders (at least in Western countries). They are so occupied with stretching, aligning and strengthening the body that they don't spend a lot of time on studying, exploring, or sharing the wisdom of yoga.

That's why most yoga practitioners only experience yoga as a physical practice. Sure, if you come to class regularly you'll pick up a few yogic catch phrases and clichés. And if you take a 200 hour YTT you'll learn about Patanjali's 8-limbed path to Enlightenment.

But from my own training experiences and conversations with hundreds of fellow teachers I know that most YTTs don't go beyond what you can find on Wikipedia. The problem is that yoga philosophy doesn't come to life just because you read something out loud.

What yoga teachers need to turn knowledge into wisdom and theory into action is a translation of ancient ideas (which can seem pretty cryptic) for life in the modern world. And a guide who is passionate enough about the subject to spark a fire in their students.

Let's get out of the baby pool and go to the deep end

I created the Applied Yoga Philosophy training to give you both. With this program I want to get you hooked on what I think is the most underrated aspect of yoga.

In 20 hours I'll teach you everything that you need to know about the yoga tradition and yoga philosophy. What you learn in this course will - if you allow for it - result in a profound personal transformation. You'll open up to new ideas, ask questions you'v never asked before and see the world from a different angle.

Together, we'll leave the "baby pool of yoga" which is all about the physical practice of asana. And jump head first into the deep end of the pool. It'll get dark for a moment. The water might be cold. There are fewer people around to play with. But trust me: It'll be worth it!

"This training was very extensive, covering all aspects of Yoga and then some. The atmosphere was very inviting and encouraging. I graduated feeling very empowered and confident in my ability to lead Yogis through their practice."
