My Yoga Story in a Nutshell

I spent 10,000 hours on figuring out how to make yoga a game changer for my entire life. Not just my fitness and stress levels. But everything that I care about.

Along the way I "stumbled" into teaching yoga. To a handful of friends at first. Then to a dozen students at a local studio. Then, almost overnight, to more than 1 Million students online.

In early 2020, after 10 years in the yoga industry, I started Movement Wisdom Yoga to pass on what I've learned. To help you make yoga the ONE thing that changes everything else. To turn you into a versatile, skillful and inspiring yoga professional who will pass on the torch.

What I can help you with

Study with me if these are your goals:

  1. You want to take your personal asana practice to new heights. Really understand what you're doing on the mat. Getting into old poses in new ways, and working your way into poses you've never done before. Or knowing and the limits of your practice - and feeling fully content.

  2. You want to explore the full spectrum of yoga. Not just practice asana, but also build an informed and inspired meditation and pranayama practice. Not just do yoga, but become yoga. See the world through the eyes of a yogi and instead of leaving your practice behind in Savasana.

  3. You want to become a versatile, knowledgeable and inspiring yoga teacher. One who teaches both the movement and the wisdom of yoga. Who takes yoga classes beyond stretching. Who guides students through profound transformation.

How I would describe my style

My approach to yoga is not defined by a set sequence (as in the Ashtanga tradition), special equipment (like in Aerial Yoga) or a specific room temperature (Hot Yoga 🥵). Instead, I live, practice and teach based on 7 core principles.

My approach to yoga is not defined by a set sequence (as in the Ashtanga tradition), special equipment (like in Aerial Yoga) or a specific room temperature (Hot Yoga 🥵). Instead, I live, practice and teach based on 7 core principles.

1.

1.

Movement × Wisdom = Yoga

Yoga used to be purely spiritual. The royal path towards enlightenment. Today, yoga is predominantly physical. The royal path towards a great butt. My teaching puts equal emphasis on both dimensions because the magic of yoga happens where the physical meets the spiritual.

2.

2.

Every Body Is Unique

Humans are not just different on the outside, but also on the inside. That’s why the "one-size-fits-all" cues we can still hear in studios around the world don't work. I'll teach you to embrace human uniqueness and how you can empower students to tailor their yoga practice to their body and personal circumstances.

3.

3.

 But Every Thing Is One

Each of us is unique. But at the same time we're all one. Part of the same universal energy. And more connected than we think. I'll help find your way to experience the Oneness of all things. And to wrap your head around what you want this to mean for your life. Without having to subscribe to any religious beliefs.

4.

4.

Walk The Middle Path

As humans we are half material, half spirit. Half earthly, half cosmic. Half  chained, half free. Half real, half illusion. Half knowing, half wondering. Half here, half there. Half in,  half out. That's why my approach to yoga is all about walking the Middle Path.

5.

5.

Be Your Own Guru

I'm not here to just give you facts and figures. My mission is to empower you through — by making my teachings actionable, by giving you everything you need to know, and by cutting out all the rest.

6.

6.

Safety First, And Fun Too

Yoga has the power to turn our blah into bliss, anger into love, desire into contentment, weakness into strength, conflict into peace, fear into trust, pain into health. But your transformation doesn't just happen. To reap the incredible rewards yoga has to offer we need to show up for ourselves. We need discipline and motivation. My goal as a teacher is to create classes and courses that make it easy and fun for you to make yoga a habit for life.

Share The Magic

I want to live in a world full of bombastic yoga teachers. So that we can all enjoy amazing yoga classes all the time. That's why I do everything I can to help you crack the code. Hoping that you will share the magic of yoga with students in your community.

How I went from 12 students at my local studio to 1 Million students online practically overnight

The first time I tried yoga I absolutely hated it — and decided it wasn't for me. But a few years later my mom got diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and asked me to join her for yoga classes at the hospital in Texas. I couldn't say no.

The yoga sessions in the clinic were calm, slow, gentle. Nothing spectacular. But they worked like magic! Not just for my mom who beat the cancer (she's still doing yoga on the daily). But also for me. I returned home feeling grounded, with a positive outlook on life and an irresistible urge to keep up the good yoga.

First, I stumbled into the Yin class of a friend of a friend. When 3 Yin sessions per week weren't enough anymore, I discovered stronger styles of yoga like Hatha and Vinyasa Flow.

Eventually, a friend told me I could take a teacher training and do nothing but yoga for a whole month. I immediately sold half of my stuff and signed up for my first 200 hour YTT in India.

This was the beginning of a 10 year learning journey dedicated to studying, practicing and teaching yoga all day everyday.

The education I received allowed me to turn yoga into a new way of being me, of existing in the world. And even though I didn't plan on teaching yoga initially, I ended up becoming a yoga teacher and teacher's teacher nonetheless.

I started out teaching a few friends after my first YTT. Then I taught part time at local studios — Never would I have dreamed of leading classes for more than 12 people.

But one night, after a sweaty Vinyasa class, a student whom I had never seen in before asked if I would like to become the face of one of the largest online yoga platforms in the world - DoYouYoga.

I said yes. My first program - the 30 Day Yoga Challenge - reached more than 1 Million students and led to new programs on DoYou and YouAligned (another yoga subscription platform).

Students began to reach out to me asking for retreats and even YTTs. At that point I quit my job as head of the English department at a local high school and started to teach yoga full time.

Let's fast forward!

Why I started Movement Wisdom Yoga

I'm forever grateful for the education that I have received and the lessons I learned through trial and error.

But looking back it's glaringly obvious that I spent too much time, too much money and too much energy on my yoga education.

In order to learn what every solid yoga teacher needs to know I took 8 YTTs, 23 specialty workshops, and read my way through hundreds of yoga books.

Plus, I embarrassed myself in front of my students a million times because 1000s of hours in formal education for yoga teachers didn't included surprisingly little teaching practice.

All in all, my yoga education cost me around $50,000 and took 10,000 hours.

And here is the bigger problem:

I know from conversations with 100s of fellow yoga teachers and YTT students that my own story is not the unfortunate exception. It's the sad truth for anyone who wants to really understand yoga and experience it's full power.

That's especially true if your goal is to become a professional teacher.

It shouldn't be so difficult to get a complete yoga education.

That's why I started Movement Wisdom.

I'm here to teach you all the important (and hard-to-come-by) insights that I have collected over time. You will learn in weeks what took me years to figure out. For a fraction of the price. And you'll get your courses delivered to your doorstep instead of having to take all your vacation days and fly around the world.

As sad as it is — I truly believe that 99% of yoga teachers aren't nearly as good as they could be. They could be life-changing teachers. But they are not.

This means that 99% of their students never get to experience the life-changing magic of yoga.

No wonder then that more and more people see yoga as a only a workout — when in reality yoga is movement with meaning, philosophy in action.

I am convinced that yoga is the most powerful practice ever invented. I've made it my mission to keep the idea of yoga as a personal superpower alive. And I would love nothing more than for you to join me on this mission.

Let's redefine what it means to teach yoga together!
